Illusions Illusions 1.)  While talking to Gatsby in the beginning of the chapter, Nick mentions two places that Gatsby should run to so he can avoid any police attention because of hitting Myrtle. What are the two places he mentions?

 

2.)  Why won’t Gatsby consider leaving town? Who is he concerned about and what does he think will happen to that person?

 

3.)  What did Gatsby pretend to be when he first met Daisy? Why did Gatsby pretend to do this?

 

4.)  In The Great Gatsby the seasons in which events occur are significant and can dictate the events that happen. In which season did Gatsby leave Daisy and join the war.

6.)  What where two reasons why Daisy fell so hard for Tom when he arrived in town.

12.)At the beginning of Chapter eight Jay Gatsby references Dan Cody Back from the beginning of the novel, the “night that he told [Gatsby] the strange story of his youth”(The Great Gatsby). How has Dan Cody influenced Jay Gatsby’s life and how has Dan Cody’s Death changed the Course of Gatsby’s life?

 

13.)Gatsby and Daisy had met many years ago before Gatsby had gone off to war. Gatsby Says Daisy “was the first ‘nice’ girl he had ever met”(The Great Gatsby) at the beginning of chapter eight. Was Daisy and Gatsby’s relationship an immature relationship driven by lust and youth or did both Daisy and Gatsby love each other deeply?

 

14.)Chapter eight often reflects events that had happened in chapter two. In Chapter two the valley of ashes is described and the eyes of T.J. Eckleburg looking down on the Valley of ashes from the billboard. In Chapter eight the eyes appear again and have a profound effect on George Wilson spirituality. How was George Wilson’s perception of god changed from the eyes of T.J. Eckleburg?

 

15.)Throughout the novel both Tom and Gatsby have been interested in Daisy and both Tom and Gatsby are in a constant battle to win her over. In Chapter eight Tom suggests that Gatsby and Daisy drive in the same car home. Why did Tom have no problem insisting that Daisy and Gatsby drive home together giving Gatsby a chance to win Daisy?

 

16.)Gatsby’s servant informed Gatsby that he was going to drain his pool due to the leaves falling in the autumn. Gatsby turned to him and said “you know, old sport, I’ve never used that pool all summer”(The Great Gatsby). What is the significance of the unused pool? The time of year and the season that the book is in also plays a part in this novel. What is the significance of the changing of seasons and the next season to come?

1) Nick tells Gatsby to go to Atlantic city of Montreal.
2)Gatsby will not leave town with out daisy because he fears that Tom will hurt her.
3)Gatsby pretended to be from the same backround of wealth as Daisy when he was not, He only did this so that she would not dump him for someone of his social stature.
4)Gatsby left for war during Fall.
5)Gatsby Commanded the Divisional machine-guns.
6)Daisy like Tom because there was a wholesome bulkiness about him and his position.
8)Tom and Daisy were still in France when Gatsby left the war. Gatsby went to Louisville where he has met her and walked around all the places they had been together.
9) Gatsby felt like he was leaving Daisy behind when he left Louisville.
10)When Nick said that he was telling gatsby that he was a much better person than Jordan, Tom and Daisy put together.
11) When Jordan called Nick he was at work and it was just before noon.
12)I believe that in a way Gatsby besides wanting to find Daisy he wanted to follow in the foot steps of Dan Cody and get to the status he was at when he died.
13)I believe that to Gatsby the relationship was one of deep love but to Daisy the relationship was of lustful youth.
14) George uses the eyes as a symbol for god in his own mind. He uses them to represent that gad is everywhere and always watching.
